Scholarly publishing at the National Defense University

The National Defense University recommends the publication of research articles and conference proceedings:

  • in high-quality, scientific Open Access publishing channels, under a CC license or
  • in high-quality, scientific publishing channels that allow immediate self-archiving of the article in the NDU's institutional repository, under a CC license, or
  • in high-quality, scientific publishing channels, where Open Access under a CC license is included in the license agreement without additional costs.

The National Defense University's publications are available Open Access in the Doria institutional repository.

When choosing a publication channel, the author must take into consideration scientific quality, reliability and transparency of the publication.

The JUFO classification, the DOAJ list of Open Access peer-reviewed journals, and the Think Check Submit checklist can be helpful when assessing the possible publication channels. In addition, different publishers have different indicators of journal quality. See, for example, Aalto University’s How to choose a scientific publication for your research page. See also the Finnish Defence Research Agency’s publication 01-2019, Opas tieteellisten julkaisujen laadun arviointiin ja työkaluja tutkimuksen tueksi (in Finnish).

Open Access often - but not always - involves an article processing charge (APC). APC fees and any discounts should always be considered before the article is submitted to the journal and should be budgeted for in advance. See the APC tab for more detailed instructions.

Concepts of Open Access

APC fee: An article processing charge is a fee paid to a publisher for making the work available as Open Access.

Open Access (OA): The publication can be read, printed, and copied for at least non-commercial use in its entirety via the Internet free of charge.

CC Licenses: The Creative Commons license is an international licensing standard that allows an author to share some of their copyright and give the user, viewer, or experiencer the work they want. See more: https://creativecommons.fi, https://creativecommons.org/ and Ohje tekijänoikeuksiin liittyvästä avoimesta lisensoinnista tutkijoille ja tieteellisille kustantajille (in Finnish).

Embargo: A restriction under which material can be freely used only after a set waiting period, for example once a publication has been released.)

Hybrid Open Access: A subscription journal where a published article can be published open access for an additional fee.

Self-archiving (Green OA): Self-archiving is a form of Open Access,
Green OA. Self-archiving increases the visibility and impact of the publication. The publication also remains in its repository and has a permanent address there, which facilitates the discovery and reference of the publication. Doria is used for self-archiving at the National Defense University.
